For my brakes to cool off...again. Any recomendations for pads? So far ive overheated some ceramics and a set of semi metailic,”fade free pads” over the past 200 miles on new blank rotors

I believe that the pads are getting to hot because I will loose pressure and once I stop the brakes are smoking. Overheated about 8 times with the ceramics. In one drive the brakes have overheated twice with the semimetallics. Yes I drive too fast but its also due to the mountainous nature of the roads.

It sounds like you’re doing it wrong. Like, all of it.

What sort of rotors are you using? Blanks, cross-drilled and/or slotted? Slotted rotors will quickly eat through pads.

Are you boiling your fluid or something similar? What rotor and caliper temperatures are you seeing?

Also, are the wheels creating enough of a negative pressure zone that you get airflow through the wheel well? If you have ducts to the wells, do you have sufficient positive pressure on the ducts to get air to flow through them?

I drive an autobox civic and am too young to autox (i think) the brakes are drums on the rear and disc fronts

I’m guessing your front pads are fading? If they’re getting too hot you might have an issue with a caliper not releasing all the way which might be letting your pads drag on your rotors. If that’s not an issue then you might not be bedding them in correctly (just drive like normal, avoid panic stops for the hundred miles or so), or you’re riding the brake like a grandmother. I can’t for any reason imagine your brakes staying hot unless you’re always on them or there is another mechanical issue.

Party-vi’s answer below nailed it.

autobox...you’re not 2 foot driving are you? I can’t tell you how many 2 foot drivers are actually riding the brake the whole time that don’t even know they’re touching the pedal.

you nailed it.

Sony, smack the shit out of your calipers with a hammer and take a ride to see if they stay cooler. Actually smack the shit out of your drums too just in case

I might just be screwing up on the bed in process, but theres no avoiding the fact that the first drive will have about 1 mile of brake riding as I go from my house(on the top of a mountain)to the county road(far below said mountain).

I guess brake riding happens but its in the since of, slowing from 70 to 40 just before a corner and then doing it again and again. Ill invest in some low grade race pads since wear isnt an issue to me and see what happens.

one foot does all the fun stuff and engine braking is used.

whoa wait.

Engine braking? Autobox? are you actually manually shifting your automatic?

It sounds like maybe a stuck caliber then.

Ill recheck the calipers and Yes I manually shift a 250,000+ mile automatic

Mostly because it cant be trusted to shift before redline and because the design of the shifter allows control of all 4 of the gears.

Riffing off the other comments, do they make ventilated brake rotors for that car? Prolly not but there isn’t a dang non-overbuilt car built that can’t fade in the right environment.

I don’t like brake fading. In fact, it scares me a little. Convert to a manual tranny?

Im gonna get rid of this car as soon as I can, so no $$$ is gonna be thrown at it.

Maybe race pads since its probly just cheap pad problems.
